Last Look: Sunset Magazine in Menlo Park

Bay Area Events/ Design/ Home/ Social Time

plantboxes_logoSunset Magazine, a Menlo Park local since 1951, is relocating to Oakland this winter where their wine cellar will flourish and a modern test kitchen will spur creativity for a myriad of new recipes. To celebrate the news, and say farewell to what has been the Time Warner owned magazine’s home for so long, Sunset held their last Menlo Park Sunset Celebration Weekend June 6-7, and it was magnificent. I didn’t make it, I went to an event preview while everyone was still setting up, but I was afforded the opportunity to get a last glimpse into the world of Sunset publishing while their test gardens, kitchen and cellar are all in the same spot as their offices (the garden is moving to Sonoma County). Here’s a peek at celebration weekend, and look at the home of a magazine that fills so many family homes with inspiring aromas, plentiful garden tips and simply something pretty to look at when you need a magazine break from goings on with the kids. Savvy Highlights: Disney On Ice Let’s Celebrate

Adventure/ Bay Area Events/ Social Time

For about 2 years now, I’ve been taking my daughter to see two Disney on Ice performances a year. After a bit the performances seem to have a lot in common and I get a bit bored with the same stories (but my daughter LOVES them). I prefer add-ons to the Disney tales instead of recaps of the movies, so when I arrived for Let’s Celebrate, the latest show here in Northern California, I was excited for something a bit different . . . and I wasn’t disappointed! Here are some of my favorite highlights form one parent who has seen one too many of these shows to another. Read more

Win Fall 2014 SF Birth & Baby Fair Tickets!

Adventure/ Bay Area Events/ Social Time

BBF_Collage2014I was pregnant the first time I went to the San Francisco Birth & Baby Fair, and my love of baby fairs began from there. I didn’t know what to expect in the future of my pregnancy or birth, so I was excited to learn about so many products, techniques and methods for different families in one place. I arrived early to get a goodie bag (first 150 families get one) and snagged as many product samples as I could. I attended baby sign and cloth diapering workshops, then entered a raffle to win an Orbit stroller (which I didn’t win). I was hooked on baby fairs after that (and eventually won a few things). Since then, I’ve been to all of the bi-annual SF Birth & Baby Fairs, and try to cover every baby and kid fair/expo in the SF Bay Area.

Though I love them all, the Birth & Baby Fair is still my favorite. Now that my daughter is 3, the tot area with snacks and art projects is imperative. This baby fair is just so well planned. I get to nurse my daughter (yep, I’m an ‘extended’ nurser) and sit in a comfy chair to rest my tired feet for some down time at the Nursing Nook, then let her run amuck in the toy area so that she’ll let me sit in on a demo or speaker’s talk for a bit.

Unlike some other fairs, this one really focuses on sharing local businesses and being the best place for pregos as well as parents with babies or toddlers. I just love that it covers the whole family from conception to the first 4 years (at least). The fair is usually held at Fort Mason Center in the Marina area of SF, close to Crissy field and Ocean Beach, or at San Mateo Convention Center. The next B&BF is on Nov. 9 at Fort Mason’s Herbst Pavilion — it’s a gorgeous area in SF just near the Presidio and Palace of Fine Arts (basically my favorite SF spots) with easy to find, free parking. Yes, I just said the word ‘easy’ and then ‘free’ about a parking place in SF. There’s also paid parking within Fort Mason if you choose to go that route.

If you’re a parent or parent-to-be and you’re ready to learn more about parenting, check out some new and amazing family products, or could use a mini spa treatment and a large assortment of full-size goodies (in the goodie bags given to first 150 attendees), this is the local event for you!

Want to go? You can either purchase a ticket online or enter my giveaway below! I’m giving away 1 VIP ticket which includes a guaranteed goodie bag with bonus goodies (awesome if you’re never on time to places), and 2 general admission passes.

Win Tickets to See Disney on Ice in San Jose

Adventure/ Bay Area Events/ Social Time

Credit: Feld Entertainment

Going to see Feld Entertainment’s Disney on Ice has become a sort of bi-annual tradition for my daughter and I. She loves to see all the princesses, and I’m fairly impressed by blend of ice skating and circus performance that goes on (I mean there’s fire, smoke, lights, dancing, aerial work, and people flying by wires sometimes). The performance and show theme changes every time (I think Frozen is on the East Coast right now and coming to California in Spring eeeeh!) so though it’s all Disney on Ice with some similarities, they’re all different. Minnie, Mickey and gang come out and say hello, then go on a journey through so many different adventures and stories told.

Disney on Ice Worlds of Fantasy takes the audience through four stories in and one whirlwind adventure that has lovable characters for everyone in the family. Watch as the cast of Cars race across the ice, visit the fairies of Pixie Hollow, watch as the toys from Toy Story attempt an escape from Sunnyside Daycare, and dive into the ocean with Ariel and all her friends.

Showings start Oct. 8 at Oracle Arena in Oakland then end on Oct. 19 at SAP Center in San Jose. If you’ve always wanted to take the family to Disney on Ice but never could, now’s your chance because they gave Savvy Every Day tickets to give away! Enter below for a chance to win one of two family 4-packs of tickets to see the show! I hope to see you there and good luck!
